Chapter 7

H eedless of the heat, Ty knocked his fist through the wall of fire, reaching for her. He wasn’t going to lose her now, not when it had taken him so long to find her.

“Irina, grab my hand,” he commanded her, ignoring the pain as the flames lapped at his skin.

She shook her head, her hair tangling in the dirt of the basement floor and the hot ash falling from above. Her eyes wide with fear, she murmured, “No…”

Determined to save her, he kicked aside the burning debris, knocking down the wall that separated them. The studs and drywall collapsed into broken splinters and ash. Then he leaned down and he hefted off the joist that had fallen across her legs.

“I’ve got you,” he said as she vaulted to her feet and into his arms. Smoke clung to her hair, soot streaking her face. “You’re okay.”

“We’re still trapped, Ty,” she said, holding tight to his back, her fingers clenched in his shirt.

“No, we’re not.” He dropped a kiss on her lips, tasting smoke. “Remember, I said I’d protect you.”

She nodded, but he could see the struggle going on inside her, the struggle to trust him. The struggle not to fall apart. Again.

“I trust you,” she repeated, but he couldn’t help wondering who she was trying to convince, him or herself.

His hands on her shoulders, he pushed her back. “I’m going to get us out of here,” he assured her.

Her head bobbed in a nervous nod as she clutched at him, obviously scared to lose contact with him again.

He caught her wrist, pulling her hand from his shirt. Ignoring the burn from where the flames had brushed his skin, he wrapped his fingers around her thin wrist, then dragged her behind him. They scrambled across smoldering boards and crushed boxes toward the cement stairs that led up to a set of metal doors. She’d kept up with him, her fingers gripping his forearm. Strength and determination glowed in her dark eyes.

He released her to grab the inside handles and rattle the doors in their frames. They were locked. From the outside.

“Goddamn him,” Irina yelled, blinking back tears of frustration as she slammed her fists against the metal doors. “He made sure we couldn’t get out.”

Ty shook his head. Roarke wasn’t the monster who’d put the chain through the outside handles, securing it with a padlock to keep Ty inside, imprisoned in the basement so he couldn’t get out, so he couldn’t tell anyone what his father had done to him.

Her hand, the knuckles scraped from the metal, closed around his arm. “I’m sorry….”

He was a sorry son of a bitch, but Ty wasn’t going to let the heartless bastard hurt him anymore. He pushed against the doors, rattling the metal.

“Roarke could be up there, waiting,” she cautioned, her voice quavering with fear. The flames from the other side of the basement cast light and chased shadows around her face. Her dark eyes reflected back the fire.

He shoved against the doors again.
